The story follows the misadventure of new dragoneer school graduate Valen. Outside of his name, life is going pretty good for the young fellow. At some point he'll take up the responsibility of an elite knight known as a dragoneer - a special soldier sworn to protect the sacred dragons of the world. One day a mysterious Black Dragon arrives to destroy Valen's town and things get hectic. Of course he set out to find what this particular dragon's beef is all about. With the help of his comrades, he might just survive the journey.
